Garner's St. Mary's Dream

A Surreal Homecoming

For some fighters, a world title shot is the pinnacle. For Ryan Garner, it’s about where that shot takes place. Sat pitchside at St. Mary’s Stadium, the home of his beloved Southampton FC, the reality of his lifelong dream is beginning to sink in. On June 20th, 2026, Garner will walk out in front of his home crowd to challenge Michael Magnesy for the WBC interim super featherweight title, and the feeling, as he puts it, is “a bit real.”

“We've talked about it many times,” Garner explained, gazing around the empty stands that will soon be filled with his supporters. “People ask me, ‘When are you fighting here?’ For like the last few years... and for it to actually happen, mate. The messages I've had since it's been announced, it's been a bit mental. It’s a bit surreal like you say, growing up in Southampton, supporting the club since I was young, and now actually fighting here. It's unreal.”

Making South Coast History

This isn't just a big night for Garner; it's a landmark event for the entire city. The fight marks the first-ever professional boxing show to be held at St. Mary’s, a venue that has seen decades of footballing highs and lows but never the squared circle. Garner is acutely aware of the history he’s about to make. “I believe it's the first ever boxing show ever been here at St. Mary's,” he said. “I'm the first ever person to fight for a world title from Southampton and come June 20th, be the first person to win it as well.”

The weight of the moment isn’t lost on him, but it also provides a sense of profound fulfillment. “This is my dream, mate. After June 20th, if I retired... I can retire a happy man saying, ‘Look, I lived out my dream. I fought at St. Mary's, headlined, fought for a title.’ But yet, there's still more to come after it.”

A Promise Kept by Frank Warren

The journey to this night has been a long one, built on a foundation of trust and a promise made years ago. Garner has been with promoter Frank Warren for his entire professional career, and the dream of a St. Mary's showcase has always been part of the conversation. It was a goal that had to be earned, step by step, title by title.

“We've been talking about it for years... before I even fought for any form of title,” Garner recalled. “Now I've been keep winning and keep winning, winning this title, that title, and then to get myself in the position I am today.” He credits Warren for staying true to his word. “He's always believed in me... He's stuck to his word. We've always said our dream is here... and he said, ‘Make it happen.’ And he's made it happen, mate. So I can't thank him enough.”

Respect, But a Job to Do

Standing in the opposite corner will be Italy’s Michael Magnesy, a tough, forward-pressing fighter Garner has crossed paths with before in the gym. While there is a clear level of professional respect between the two camps, Garner is under no illusions about the task at hand. “I got nothing but respect for him,” Garner stated. “But at the end of the day, it's a job and I'm going to go in there and do a job.”

When asked how he sees the fight unfolding, Garner’s confidence is palpable. He envisions a tactical battle where his precision and speed will be the difference-maker against Magnesy’s relentless pressure. “I see me getting to him late,” he predicted. “The way I'm very accurate, I think, and my speed kills. As he's going to keep marching forward, I'm just going to beat him to the punch every time... and then later on grind him down and get the job done.”

Eyes on the American Prize

While the homecoming is the dream, a victory on June 20th opens the door to an even bigger stage. The super featherweight division is teeming with talent, and winning the interim title would place Garner in a prime position for major unification fights. “It puts me in for hopefully the world champions, the O'Shaquie Fosters or the winner of Ray Ford,” he noted. For Garner, the path is clear: fulfill a lifelong ambition at home, then conquer the world. “The dream is to fight at St. Mary's. I'm going to tick that box on June 20th and hopefully get an America fight against the winner of that one.”
