Mosley Jr. Wants Zuffa's King

The Perks of Zuffa Boxing

As Shane Mosley Jr. prepares for his high-stakes middleweight showdown with Serhii Bohachuk on May 10th, he’s not just getting ready for a fight; he’s settling into a new ecosystem. Training under coach Eric Balange at Split-T Gym, Mosley Jr. revealed the significant advantages that come with being a Zuffa boxer. While he hasn't yet trained at the UFC Apex or Performance Institute, he's already reaping the benefits. “I have done the physical therapy. I've gotten the, you know, the food there. I've also gotten the nutrition as far as like supplements,” Mosley Jr. explained. But the biggest game-changer is the access to elite recovery tools. “We do like, you know, sauna, ice bath, they got cold plunge… red light therapy beds.” For a fighter, these aren’t luxuries; they're essential tools for longevity and performance. He highlighted the financial relief of having these expenses covered, noting that fighters often skip crucial recovery to save money, risking injury. “For us, we get to get it paid for,” he said. “It's really cool that expense is taken care of, which helps out a lot.”

An 'Illusion of Choice'

Mosley Jr.’s journey to the Bohachuk fight was anything but straightforward. The call from Zuffa came at a surprising time—just days after his loss to Jesus Ramos Jr. “I thought it was like a joke. Like, what? Like, they want me,” he admitted. Once signed, the matchmaking process began, and it came with a twist. Zuffa presented him with a few potential opponents, including Bohachuk. However, when Mosley Jr. inquired about the other names, he was met with roadblocks. “I was like, ‘Oh, you know, what about this guy?’... ‘Oh, that guy I can't fight,’” he recounted. After a few attempts, the picture became clear. “If I didn't have a choice to fight Serhii Bohachuk, just tell me,” he said with a laugh. Mosley Jr. wasn't afraid of the matchup but was perplexed by what he called the “illusion of choice.” He would have preferred a direct approach. “If you got to fight that guy, then… let's go,” he stated, ready to pivot from strategy to preparation once the opponent was locked in.

Targeting 'The King'

While Serhii Bohachuk is his immediate focus, Shane Mosley Jr.’s long-term sights are set on one man: Callum Walsh. Walsh has been positioned as the face of Zuffa’s middleweight division, headlining their inaugural card and earning Dana White’s promotional backing. For Mosley Jr., that puts a target squarely on his back. “He was the headliner on the very first Zuffa card. They're pushing him as a middleweight and that's my weight. So, that's him. Okay, cool. I want him,” Mosley Jr. declared. “He's the one that calls himself king. All right. I want the king.” He was present for Walsh’s first Zuffa fight against Pedro Ocampo and gave a measured assessment. While he thought Walsh was “decent” and could rise to the level of his competition, he also believes that both he and Bohachuk are a class above. In fact, he’s confident they would both defeat Zuffa’s golden boy. “Oh, 100%,” he said when asked if he and Bohachuk could beat Walsh.

The Path to a Title

Whether his fight against Bohachuk is an official title eliminator or not, Mosley Jr. is treating it as such. His ultimate ambition is clear and unwavering: to become the first-ever Zuffa Middleweight World Champion. “When I signed, I signed because I'm going to be the first and I have the opportunity to become the first,” he asserted. He understands that facing a tough, former interim titleholder like Bohachuk right away is a difficult path, perhaps even a step down in competition before a title shot against Walsh. But it doesn’t faze him. It’s simply a necessary step on his championship journey. Like a tournament in the amateurs, you fight who they put in front of you. “I'm going to become champ. I'm going to be that guy,” he promised. “It don't matter who it is.” On May 10th, Mosley Jr. isn’t just fighting for a win; he’s fighting to prove he’s the rightful heir to a throne that hasn’t even been built yet.
